FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER View From A Pew The verses from S. John’s Gospel come at a turning point of The Last Supper. Judas has left, there is no going back now. Jesus is still trying to make his confused disciples understand what is going to happen. He talks with a new sense of urgency, of the finale, of glorification, and also gives a new commandment (not a request) that the love that the Father has shown the world is not just to be accepted but must be reflected back into the world. The responsibility is passed to them and ultimately to us, to make the world a better place. Not easy when we see the enormity of the evil being perpetrated in Ukraine. “All you need is love” the Beatles sang. If only it was that easy. FOURTH SUNDAY OF EASTER Download the pewsheet: Easter 4 (2022) View From A Pew In Acts we see Barnabas and Paul ‘spreading the word’. They begin as you would expect by starting at the top as it were with the religious Jewish authorities, the experts who are still, despite seeing the miracles, hearing the teachings and regarding the prophecies, closing their minds to the major event which took place in many of their own lifetimes, closing their minds and rejecting yet it seems not actually dismissing Jesus as a challenging phenomenon. Therefore, as Jesus instructed (Luke 10, vs10-11) the disciples “Shook the dust of that town from their feet” and turned to the pagans, many of whom, from all races and backgrounds, listened, believed, and, as we are told on John’s Revelation, received the Good News and eternal life. THIRD SUNDAY OF EASTER Download the pewsheet: Easter 3 (2022) View From A Pew Our Gospel today is based on love, reassurance, and forgiveness. We are told that this is the third time that Jesus appeared to the disciples, and it seems that they have gone back to their old jobs. He addresses them as ‘Friends’ or ‘Young men’ or even ‘boys’ depending on your version of the Bible. Again, Jesus demonstrates that he is REAL not a vision or a ghost. He makes a fire cooks a meal, and yet they hesitate. Importantly we then learn about the commissioning of Peter, to bring the church as we know it into existence and the grim warning of the consequence of what he is being asked to do. Peter knows that he betrayed Jesus, and he is asked a question three times about his love for Jesus. Is this to absolve him of his three denials? However, we see Peter’s confidence grow as he accepts his calling and his gratitude for the total forgiveness shown to him and the unfailing, forgiving love of Jesus. SECOND SUNDAY OF EASTER of DIVINE MERCY (Low Sunday) Download the pewsheet: Easter 2 (2022) View From A Pew Into the locked room, before the frightened disciples, Jesus appears. He is clearly the man who died on the cross, the one they deserted. But there is no reprimand for this or for their doubts, just reassurance to men whose lives he would change for ever, Peter, John, Thomas the biggest doubter of all, and many others who would go out and bear witness, to preach the Gospel of the Risen Christ, to heal the sick and record what really did happen. Who can doubt the reality and the truth of the resurrection when ordinary, frail men such as they were so changed, so filled with joy and confidence that they were prepared to go into an alien world and boldly speak out and be ready to die in the telling which many of them did. If nothing else this really gives truth to the amazing story of Christ’s victory over death.
