Matthew’s gospel clearly shows that even while Jesus was still with them the early Christian church was not always harmonious. Hence the need for Jesus to spell out how disputes should be dealt with. Essentially, he says, it is all about being prepared to sit down together, discuss and be prepared to admit if you are in the wrong. In other words, maintaining friendship and Unity. If this is done and fair decisions made, then, Jesus says, he will always be present at such discussions – even PCC meetings!
