PENTECOST

View from a Pew

Up to this point in the Scriptures, The Holy Spirit may have been seen as an elusive, hard to define member of the Trinity. Described variously as ‘The Comforter’, ‘The Giver of Gifts’, initially The Spirit appears to have a ‘non-specific’ role. However, the coming of The Spirit at Pentecost emphasises the totality of what God has achieved in Jesus Christ (our risen Lord and Saviour!). It is also The Spirit of Truth which comes now to bear witness to the unity of Father and Son, and the truth of Jesus Christ. The Spirit also judges we are told, asking ” Do you choose for or against God?” Echoing the life and mission of Jesus. Finally, the Holy Spirit now reveals its purpose, as the third, vital element of The Divine Trinity.
