Some of us are a ‘Mary’ and some of us are a ‘Martha’, and even though my middle name is ‘Mary’ I know that I am definitely more of a ‘Martha’ (some of you may have noticed!)
Abraham however seems to have got the balance about right and I think, although he did have a good wife behind him. He made his visitors welcome, arranged food for them, but then he stopped and LISTENED to hear why they had come.
Mary too was a listener while busy Martha was the ‘doer’, it’s in her nature it seems. I do try to do better, to be more of a Mary, but it is difficult when you are a Martha to just be still and listen when you can see things that you think needs doing. You have to try very hard to get your priorities right and sit on your hands sometimes; believe me it’s not easy!
