2nd Sunday of Christmas
View From A Pew
Last Monday was Holy Innocents’ Day. As described by Matthew, Joseph was warned not to go home but to flee into Egypt as King Herod, fearing the new ‘King’ would threaten his throne, ordered the slaughter of male babies in Bethlehem. There seems to be some ambiguity about the length of this exile (which fulfilled an Old Testament prophecy) Mark says until Herod’s death, while Luke describes that eight days after the birth Mary, Joseph and Jesus went to the temple in Jerusalem. But in either event, even from the outset, it is clear that Jesus was politically hunted from birth even to the cross.
