TWENTY-THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

I must admit that at first reading I was at a loss to come to terms with today’s Gospel, still am to a degree. The word ‘Hate’ is very emotive and to hear it attributed to Jesus of all people just does not sit well with me. So, I turned to my personal Bible ‘The Living Bible Edition’ which I find easier to read than some versions and found that there the passage reads “Anyone who wants to be my follower must love me far more than et., etc., ” the word ‘Hate’ is not used. Incredible isn’t it that one small word can make such a difference to what you are reading? Still this commandment is very hard, almost too hard for many, me included. Certainly, it comes with the advice which Jesus gives, a warning you might call it, that the decision he is asking people to make, like all major decisions in life, requires careful evaluation, a weighing up of the pros and cons and contemplation as to whether the sacrifices are worth the rewards, is a very sound one. Requires more thought, I think.
