SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT

Paul’s prison cell must have been a busy place with messages coming and going, Paul taking advantage of his time to catch up on his correspondence; and by using his time profitably practising what he preached. The point of the passage from Luke is to tell us who John the Baptist was, and, more importantly, who he was not. Luke gives us a detailed account of precisely when and where John would appear, at a particularly important and exact point in time. John’s job, we are told is, “To make the way straight”, to prepare for Jesus’ coming. John is the messenger but he is not the ‘message’. The message is Jesus Christ himself.
