The past two weeks’ Gospel readings, and today’s are progressive. Luke 8-10 sets out a very interesting mission strategy, first we have Jesus himself travelling and healing. In chapter 9 it is the turn of the disciples to have a go and there is a sense of urgency it seems, if they get a negative response they must move on at once. And now in chapter 10 we hear of a sort of ‘debriefing’ as it were. Yes, they had been successful in part but their mission, it is pointed out, is NOT to gain ‘brownie’ points or to measure themselves against each other. Their rewards, they are told will be found in heaven not on earth, their goal to reap a rich harvest, for a new creation.
