In a discussion group recently the subject of life after death came up and someone said “Well no one has ever come back to tell us have they?” As you would expect I soon put them straight on that one. Yet even in today’s Gospel, Abraham seems disheartened that our Lord’s resurrection had still not made people sit up and listen. Here we see a rich man, in life oblivious to the needs around him yet begging now for someone to go back and tell his loved ones of his fate, and to warn them to care for those less fortunate than themselves. St. Teresa of Avila wrote – “Our Lord asks but two things of us: love for him and love for our neighbour” For the rich man there was no redemption, he left it too late. I think in the next months we shall be seeing many neighbours in need.
