TWENTY-SEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
View From A Pew
Who is listening to Jesus’ parables, who are they aimed at? Just the disciples or a wider audience? Some stories are provocative and some puzzling, often there is a sting in the tail. There does seem to be a growing sense of urgency in them, does this indicate a heightening of tensions to come? Do the disciples pick up on this and respond by asking for an increase in faith in order to cope with what lay ahead? Jesus’ reply is rather short, curt even, a touch perhaps of exasperation. They don’t need MORE faith they just need to use better what they have already. Even the smallest amount he tells them can work wonders. Paul reminds us that, through faith, anything can be achieved if we enlist the help of The Holy Spirit which Jesus promised he would leave with us and FOR us, to use when our faith needs a bit of a boost. But do we?
